Chakraviu Nepal Field Assessment Highlights Urgent Education and Wellbeing Needs Among Flood-Affected Children in Rasuwa, Nepal<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Kathmandu, 6 October 2026<\/strong> – On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic flash flood struck Rasuwa District of Nepal following a sudden glacial collapse and massive debris flow in the Langtang\u2013Bhote Koshi river system. The disaster caused loss of life, homes, livelihoods and essential infrastructure, leaving families across affected communities facing a long and uncertain recovery.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While immediate relief efforts have focused on food, shelter, essential supplies and restoring access, the consequences for children are becoming increasingly evident. The crisis does not end when the floodwaters recede. For many children, the disaster has disrupted their education, family structures, economic security and emotional wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Chakraviu Nepal has completed a three-day field assessment in Rasuwa from 30 September to 2 October 2026, examining the challenges facing children and families affected by the August 2026 disaster.<\/span><\/p>

The assessment identified several urgent concerns that require attention as the response moves from immediate relief towards longer-term recovery.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\u2022 Government-led education coordination established for the response
<\/strong> The Government of Nepal has established a sector-based coordination cluster for organizations responding to the Rasuwa disaster, with the primary objective of preventing duplication, coordinating resources and ensuring that organizations respond to identified needs effectively. The education-sector coordination includes organizations such as Chakraviu Nepal, UNICEF, World Vision International Nepal, Plan International, Aasaman Nepal, People in Need and Handicap International, working within the broader government-led response framework. Chakraviu Nepal has been included in the education sector coordination mechanism and is coordinating its proposed educational recovery intervention through this framework.<\/span><\/p>

The government has also emphasized that organizations responding to the disaster should not remove children from their communities or take them elsewhere under the pretext of providing support. Assistance is expected to be delivered in coordination with local authorities and existing systems.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Children are facing significant emotional and psychosocial distress<\/strong> <\/span>
The assessment found that many families have experienced loss of life within their immediate or extended families. For children, the consequences extend beyond the loss of homes and material possessions. A significant number of children are now coping with bereavement, displacement, uncertainty and disrupted family structures. Their emotional and psychosocial wellbeing therefore requires sustained attention alongside educational support.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Children Facing Gaps in Existing Support Systems<\/strong> <\/span>
During discussions with government representatives and local stakeholders, Chakraviu Nepal learned that some families who had previously been able to afford private education with their modest income have lost parents or primary income earners in the disaster, leaving children and families in significantly more vulnerable circumstances. Some of these children may not fall within the eligibility criteria of existing government education support schemes. Chakraviu Nepal intends to consider such children within its proposed educational recovery response, alongside other flood-affected students facing significant barriers to continuing their education.<\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Risk of long-term student displacement and school closures<\/strong> <\/span>
The assessment further highlighted a growing risk of student migration and declining school retention in Rasuwa. Families who have lost livelihoods, homes or family members are increasingly considering moving their children outside the district. At the same time, families who had previously chosen private schools because they could afford them are now facing difficult decisions about whether they can continue to do so.<\/span><\/p>


<\/span><\/p>\n

Government representatives expressed concern that, without early intervention to strengthen the attractiveness, quality and accessibility of education within Rasuwa, continued student outmigration could significantly reduce school enrolment and potentially contribute to the closure of some schools over the next five to eight years. This makes educational recovery not only a matter of supporting individual children, but also of protecting the continuity of local education systems and communities.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From emergency relief to educational recovery<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The findings reinforce Chakraviu Nepal’s decision to focus its next phase of response on longer-term educational recovery and holistic wellbeing support. Chakraviu Nepal is developing a 24-month Educational Recovery and Holistic Support Programme for 250 flood-affected students, prioritizing children facing economic vulnerability, bereavement, disrupted education and a heightened risk of dropping out. The proposed programme will take a holistic approach to educational recovery, combining support for children’s learning and continued access to education with mentorship, regular follow-up and activities that nurture their emotional, physical, social and overall wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe immediate emergency response is essential, but the educational consequences of this disaster will continue long after the floodwaters have receded,\u201d said Samek Palikhel, Founder of Chakraviu Nepal. \u201cOur assessment has shown us that some children are at risk of losing not only their homes and family support, but also their connection to education. The response now needs to focus on helping these children remain in school, recover emotionally and continue to see a future for themselves within their communities.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>

Chakraviu Nepal will continue coordinating with the Government of Nepal and relevant stakeholders as it develops and implements the educational recovery response in Rasuwa.<\/span><\/p>
