Supporting 250 flood-affected students in Rasuwa with two years of educational recovery and holistic support

On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa District following a sudden glacial collapse and massive debris flow in the Langtang–Bhote Koshi river system. The disaster caused widespread loss of homes, livelihoods, and stability for families across affected communities.

For children, the impact extends beyond the immediate loss and displacement. When families are rebuilding their lives, education can become difficult to sustain. Students may lose access to learning materials, uniforms, and other essentials, while prolonged disruption can affect attendance, engagement, wellbeing, and their ability to remain in school.

Recognizing that educational recovery must continue beyond the initial emergency response, Friends of Chakraviu Nepal (FOCN) is supporting Chakraviu Nepal’s efforts to provide longer-term educational assistance to flood-affected children in Rasuwa.

From Emergency Relief to Educational Recovery

Following the disaster, Chakraviu Nepal responded to immediate community needs by providing donations and essential relief materials to flood-affected families in Rasuwa.

FOCN is now supporting the next phase of the response: helping children recover, return, and rebuild through education.

Through an Educational Recovery and Holistic Support Programme, FOCN and Chakraviu Nepal aim to support 250 school-going flood-affected students for two years, with priority given to economically vulnerable students and those at greater risk of prolonged educational disruption.

The programme is designed as a 24-month intervention rather than a one-time distribution. It combines educational assistance with wellbeing, mentorship, and regular follow-up so that support can continue as children and their families navigate the recovery process.

What the Programme Provides

Each participating student will receive support based on assessed needs, including:

  • School stationery and learning materials
  • School uniforms, shoes, and socks
  • Sports and physical activity materials
  • Personal hygiene supplies and essential school accessories
  • Creativity and learning packs
  • Mentorship and regular follow-up

The programme also recognizes that educational recovery is closely connected to a child’s overall wellbeing.

Participating schools will receive holistic wellbeing activities that may include sound healing, storytelling, creative expression, performances, and water and earth elemental therapy activities. Gratitude Corners will also be established in participating schools to create supportive spaces for reflection and connection.

These activities will extend beyond the 250 selected students and benefit the wider student population of participating schools.

Two Years of Continued Support

The programme will provide regular mentorship and follow-up throughout the two-year period. Working with schools and communities, Chakraviu Nepal will monitor student participation, attendance, educational needs, and wellbeing so that support can respond to changing circumstances.

Where appropriate, students requiring longer-term developmental support may also be considered for the ARC Fellowship, Architecting Futures. Breaking Cycles.

The approach is intended to help reduce the risk that temporary disruption caused by the disaster becomes a permanent interruption to a child’s education.

FOCN and Chakraviu Nepal

Friends of Chakraviu Nepal (FOCN) is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization working to advance holistic education, climate action, and social innovation.

FOCN supports locally developed initiatives by mobilizing resources, developing partnerships, and connecting organizations and communities in Nepal with individuals, institutions, expertise, and resources beyond Nepal.

For the Rasuwa response, FOCN is working with Chakraviu Nepal, a Nepal-based nonprofit with more than five years of experience in holistic education and student support. Chakraviu Nepal brings local knowledge, school and community relationships, and on-the-ground implementation experience to the programme.

Together, the two organizations are connecting international support with locally led educational recovery in communities affected by the disaster.

Investing in Educational Recovery

The programme is based on an average investment of US$250 per student for two years, with a fundraising target of US$62,500 for 250 students.

The investment is allocated across:

US$100 | Education Security
Learning materials, uniforms and shoes, sports materials, hygiene supplies, and creativity and learning packs.

US$70 | Student Wellbeing
Wellbeing activities and related resources.

US$45 | Mentorship & Follow-up
Ongoing student mentorship, school and family follow-up.

US$35 | Transportation, Logistics, Fieldwork & Programme Management
Field coordination, transportation, implementation, logistics, and essential administration.

250 students. Two years of support. A pathway back to learning.

FOCN’s support for the Rasuwa response reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that children affected by emergencies are not left behind when the immediate relief phase ends. By supporting educational continuity, wellbeing, and ongoing mentorship, the programme aims to help children remain connected to school while their families and communities rebuild.
