Turning donated denim into school essentials

In 2025, Friends of Chakraviu Nepal launched a fundraising campaign to support 250 students in rural and vulnerable communities across Nepal through Chakraviu Nepal’s From Jeans to Dreams: Upcycling for Education initiative.

The campaign brought together two practical needs: helping students access essential school materials and keeping textile waste in use.

Through the initiative, used denim is collected and transformed locally into durable school bags and stationery pouches. Each school kit is made from four pairs of discarded jeans, giving the material a new purpose while creating a useful resource for students.

$20 can support one student

The campaign was designed around a simple contribution:

$20 supports one student with:

  • An upcycled school bag
  • An upcycled stationery pouch
  • Hand-painted artwork on the bag
  • A day of holistic learning activities

The bags are produced locally in Nepal and designed for everyday use, including for students who may travel considerable distances to attend school.

More than a school bag

The initiative demonstrates how education support can also become an opportunity for environmental action.

By collecting and upcycling used denim, the project helps divert textile waste from disposal while encouraging communities to think differently about materials they would otherwise throw away.

At the same time, students receive practical school essentials that they can use throughout the school year.

A growing initiative

The campaign builds on Chakraviu Nepal’s wider Circular Nepal work, which brings together schools, communities, institutions, businesses, and local producers around textile recovery and circular action.

To date, the broader initiative has collected 8,000+ pairs of jeans, diverted 5,333 kg of textile waste, and reached 1,474 students across 22 schools in 5 provinces.

FOCN helps create a pathway for supporters outside Nepal to contribute to this locally implemented work.

Supporting education through action

This campaign reflects the kind of work FOCN exists to support: practical, locally led initiatives that connect resources with opportunities for children and communities in Nepal.

A donated pair of jeans can become a school bag. A contribution can help a student receive that bag. And a community can become part of a solution that connects education, environmental action, and local production.
